Student Survey Question Competition

Viewpoint Alberta 2023

Do you have a set of burning questions you’d like to ask Albertans?

Are you a full-time University of Alberta student working on your thesis or dissertation?

Here is your chance to add to our next Viewpoint Alberta survey and win $1000!

Most observers label Alberta as having Canada’s “wild west” political culture -- one grounded in western alienation, frontier masculinity, prosperity doctrine, and bootstrap individualism. Accelerated by the drop in oil prices and COVID-19 pandemic, trends in demographics, public opinion, and political behavior suggest that Alberta politics may be shifting away from this “wild west” image. Our research employs focus groups, surveys, and community engagements to assess this shift, making it the first real-time study of political culture change in Canadian history.

As part of the initiative, we are committed to supporting the next generation of political culture scholars through employment opportunities, mentorship, and opportunties to use and collect data.

This year, we are launching a new project: an annual student survey question competition. We are inviting proposals for question modules to be included in the 2023 Viewpoint Alberta Survey collected in January.

The Viewpoint Alberta project builds on public opinion research begun in November 2019 to determine if and how public opinion has shifted in Alberta as a result of the ongoing pandemic. The survey also incorporates an extensive battery of questions that probe Albertans’ attitudes toward government performance, state involvement, and citizen responsibility amid public health emergencies.
